When you are washing the bowl — wash the bowl.
More than ever, this above quote, rings loudly to me. This is a quote that I learned from one of my Darden professors. It simply means that when you are doing something, you should focus on that one thing. How many days have you had where you would get to the end of the day and you would think – wow – this day flew by? Or how many times have you been performing a task and your mind is on 1,000 other things?
I am a serious multi-tasker and for me the thought of concentrating on one process at a time totally freaks me out. Growing up, I was taught that multi-tasking was the way to get things done! I have the pre-conceived notion that doing so would make me very inefficient.
Lately I have been trying to take this quote to heart and try to focus on one thing only at a time. If I am working on a project, I turn off the ringer on my phone and close down the email. If I find my mind wondering – I quickly try to bring it back to focus on the task I am working on.
Personally – I have made sure that I focus on my loved ones when I am interacting with them. When I am eating lunch with my son at school – I give him my complete attention and I EAT THE FRIES!! I watch his facial expressions as he interacts with his friends and with me. So genuine, so innocent, so happy. I watch my oldest son practice his basketball drills – I watch him as he matures right in front of my eyes. I pay close attention to my little one as he tries to understand the world around him – and as he curiously as me questions about life. I watch my husband as he plays with the kids and as he genuinely enjoys the conversations that they are having. I watch him as he roughhouses with them individually so that they feel special.
As I sit and watch these things, I realize that life if too precious to always have my mind so busy going in 1,000 different directions that I miss what life is really about. Take the time to notice, understand and love the bowl that you are washing.
